Kate was fast asleep, but I couldn’t drift off. There was too much street noise. The bars had let out not long ago and drunks wandered along the sidewalk under her window.

Finally, I gave it up, and threw the cover off me. I slipped into my jeans, leaving them unfastened and moved to the window, brushing the sheer aside. The moon was gone, and only the streetlamps lit the town. I’d never had a bird's-eye view of Main Street like this before. I wondered absently if she had access to the roof.

I thought about that car that drove past earlier and the occupant who’d said something to Kate. I glanced over my shoulder, but she was still asleep. I don’t know why she’d lie to me, but that’s what it felt like when she said he was no one. I’ve got a thing about lies, and in that moment, all my defenses went up.

Her purse sat on the dresser, and it caught my eye. I carried it into the other room.

I knew a woman’s purse was sacred, but I was worried she was involved in something dangerous—something that had creeps threatening her at her mother’s café.

Memphis had promised to check on those two for me, but I needed to find out what I could through Kate.

I sat on the couch and peered inside her bag, trying not to disturb anything. A folded set of papers were tucked beside her wallet. I pulled them out carefully, glancing toward the bedroom door. It was still quiet.

I unfolded the packet and read it.

It was a bond enforcement contract with the skip’s information at the top. Ray Lee Baker. The name nagged at me, but I couldn’t place it. The arrest was for vehicular homicide and the bond and bounty were exorbitant.

I frowned.

If all she did was filing, why was she carrying this around?

I peered into her purse again, and noticing something with a cord wrapped around it, I pulled it out. When I flipped it over, I froze. A badge and picture ID with Kate’s face stared back at me.

For a fraction of a second, I thought she was a cop. Until I read the badge. Bond Enforcement Agent.

Holy shit.

I walked back into the bedroom dropped her purse on the bed next to her hip. That woke her, but I made sure she was wide awake. “Babe. Sit up.”

She turned and looked at me, rubbing her eyes. “What time is it?”

“What the hell is this?” I held up her badge.

Her eyes flared wide. “Um…”

“You’re gonna have to do better than that.”

“My badge.” She yanked it out of my hand. “You went through my purse?”

Her voice rose like I’d done the unimaginable. She didn’t have a clue what I was capable of. Sure, to chicks it was a big deal. I got that. But we had bigger problems than her privacy being invaded. Considering I’d had my face between her legs not two hours ago, I didn’t think she needed to hide shit from me.
